This book is the second in Dave Sawyer’s history of his hometown of Grand Haven, covering its early photographic history. Though Grand Haven’s past extends well beyond its founding in 1834, the focus of this book is from the dawn of popular photography in the early 1880s to the late 1940s, just after the war. During this roughly 70-year period, the foundations of the Lake Michigan beach town were set in place. An influx of immigrants, the rise and fall of a fishing fleet, the steady increase in manufacturing – and the population – after the Second World War; and the budding awareness that its riverfront and Lake Michigan beach needed help.
